Today I wanted to share my fun arm party and highlight an awesome fair trade group, The Base Project. I've had these bracelets for a while now and am still loving them!! They are beautifully hand-carved and so lightweight and easy to wear! I love the different designs that are inspired by the rich tribal history of the group that creates them.
The Base Project was founded by two brothers partnering with artisans around the world to design and produce locally-sourced, eco-friendly fashion at fair trade prices. They seek to impact their artisans with valuable communication, operations, finance and marketing skills as well as investing a portion of every purchase into community development projects in the artisan's region.
These bracelets are made in Namibia, situated between the expansive Kalahari Desert and the rugged coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. The area is known for high rates of unemployment, limited access to education, the persistent spread of HIV in an area with poor healthcare and frequent shortages of food and water. The bracelets are made by a co-op of artisan entrepreneurs who hand carve these bracelets as a way to support their families and their communities.
All bracelets are upcycled and made from discarded plastic pipe that is hand-cut and carved by artisans. The color on the bracelets is a combination of organic sun exposure and deep red tinted soil. This achieves a look that is similar to carved bone but is completely vegan.
The bracelets come packaged and ready to give as gifts. They
arrive in a brightly colored bag made of African market fabric with a tag that tells all about the The Base Project.
