why create?

Over time, I've noticed that we as people (and especially women) take great joy in creating things.  It seems that we are always making or decorating something.  Whether it's baking and decorating a cake, arranging a centerpiece or bouquet of flowers from the yard, sewing a dress, knitting a scarf, or remodeling our home---we are driven to create.  We enjoy making things beautiful.  So, why is it that we have this desire to create?  Genesis 1:27 tells us that we are made in the image of God.  God set us apart from the rest of creation when He made us to be thinking and feeling beings who are capable of a relationship with Him and who are more like Him than the rest of creation.  One of the ways that we are made in His image is the way that we mirror His creativity to the world.  God is the Creator, and He creates things that are beautiful and extravagant.  Sometimes when I reflect on God's creation I am amazed at His attention to detail.  Think of the intricacies of a single snowflake that is here one moment and gone the next.  Consider the beauty of all the colorful fish that live in the depths that most human eyes will never even see.  Think of all the thousands of types of flowers and trees on the planet.  Wouldn't two or three have been sufficient enough?  God didn't have to delight us with the beauty and creativity of different flowers that range in colors and shapes or trees that yield different types of yummy fruit.  I'm sure one type of fruit could have been enough to satisfy our hunger.  Or, consider God's creativity when creating people.  Aside from outward appearances, think of all the different types of personalities and the different hopes and aspirations of each person.  God is a creative God.  As we create, we are reflecting a part of the character and nature of God.  So, go ahead, create something.
